Some 25,000 police officers in eight central states and the capital launched an unprecedented operation on Tuesday in an effort to respond to the public’s clamor for government action to stem crime. The anti-crime operation began at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, lasting until midnight. By 6 p.m. police had made 96 arrests in the capital. Mexico City police chief Marcelo Ebrard told local radio stations that the operation makes use of 13,558 officers from his force, supplemented by police from the states of Puebla, Hidalgo, Morelos, Michoacan, Queretaro, Mexico, Tlaxcala and Veracruz.
