Councilman slain in Rio

A Protestant pastor who held a seat on this city’s council was killed on the first official day of campaigning for Brazil’s nationwide municipal elections in October, the Rio de Janeiro state police said Wednesday. They said Joao Monteiro de Castro was fatally shot Tuesday night as he was traveling aboard his bullet-proof car with his daughter – who was wounded – and his driver. De Castro, 70, who was elected to the Rio city council in 2000, planned to run for reelection for the conservative Liberal Front Party on Oct. 3 At approximately 9 p.m., De Castro’s car was intercepted by four gunmen on Avenida Brasil, Rio’s main thoroughfare.
