Group to Send Peacekeepers to Sudan Area

The African Union on Monday said it would send 300 peacekeepers to the Darfur region of western Sudan, where more than a million refuees have fled attacks by Arab militiamen. The announcement came as members of the 53-nation group gathered for a conference. Also Monday, a top economic adviser to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan told African leaders they should refuse to pay their huge debts if rich nations did not cancel them. The soldiers will be the first peacekeeping force for Darfur, described by the United Nations as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
