Gen. Omar Suleiman, the director of Egyptian intelligence, visited top Israeli and Palestinian officials on Wednesday to work out the precise role Egypt would play in overseeing security in the Gaza Strip once Israel relinquishes the coastal territory to the Palestinians. Comments by senior Israeli officials and General Suleiman indicated that there were major differences among the three parties. Israel insists on managing security at Gaza’s airport and seaport, while Egypt would prefer international forces there. Egypt will be training Palestinian security forces within a month, according to General Suleiman, but it reportedly also wants to exercise some supervision. Egypt also wants ministerial responsibility for security to be transferred from the Palestinian Authority’s chairman, Yasir Arafat, to the Palestinian prime minister’s office.
