French police have arrested eight people suspected of belonging to the Basque separatist organization ETA, including a leader of the band’s reserve wing, France’s Interior Ministry said Thursday. Among those captured in three swoops across the country was Ignacio Lopez de Vergara Astola, who was in charge of recruitment and training for the reserve group, a ministry spokesman said. In Madrid, Spanish Interior Minister Jose Antonio Alonso told a news conference: “(The operation) left the so-called reserve groups…of the military wing of ETA leaderless.” Alonso said police had seized weapons, false documents, computers and car registration plates.
