The death toll from the consumption of a consignment of adulterated alcohol bought on the black market in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz has risen to 19, a provincial justice official revealed. “The number of dead has reached 19,” Fars province judiciary chief Hassan Ali Amiri told the official IRNA news agency on Monday. He said that among the new dead, two were found in their homes and one in a park. Earlier he warned that “a number of people” were still in a coma, meaning the death toll could rise further still. “In the last 24 hours, 23 more people have also been admitted to hospital,” said the official, adding that five people had also been blinded. The emergency began in the early hours of Saturday, when 13 people died and 60 others were admitted to hospital after drinking a locally made alcohol that doctors suspect was laced with methanol, a highly poisonous industrial alcohol.
