At least one Iraqi was killed when mortar rounds landed near the Italian embassy in Baghdad, Iraqi police and Italian diplomats say. No embassy staff were hurt in the attack, Italy’s foreign ministry said. In the central town of Kufa, at least five people were killed and 15 injured in new clashes between US troops and Shia Muslim gunmen. Iraqi doctors said the dead from the battle, which left a pall of smoke above the city, were all civilians. The mortars exploded at 1215 GMT on Thursday, the Italian foreign ministry said. One reportedly hit a nearby restaurant, but the embassy itself was not damaged. Several people were injured in the attack, at least one seriously, Iraqi police and medics said. Full Story
