The head of the International Crisis Group’s operations in south-east Asia, Sidney Jones, has been told she must leave Indonesia with immediate effect, provoking worries that the country’s still powerful security forces could once again be trying to muzzle criticism. The immigration authorities say Ms Jones is being asked to leave because she violated her work permit by travelling outside Jakarta. Rights activists believe the true reason is that the Brussels-based ICG has published a number of reports that were critical of tactics used by the security forces in their fight against Islamic militancy and separatism.
