A Palestinian gunman killed an Israeli officer Saturday morning after opening fire on Israeli troops conducting a raid in a West Bank refugee camp known as a hotbed of militants. The violence erupted as Prime Minister Ariel Sharon prepared for what is expected to be a charged Cabinet debate over his proposal to evacuate all Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements. Although the 23 ministers will discuss the plan, a vote is not expected at Sunday’s meeting because Sharon does not have a majority, government officials said. Israeli troops have been operating in the Balata camp, just outside the northern West Bank city of Nablus, regularly in recent days in an effort to root out Palestinian militants. Full Story
