Palestinian Gunman Kills Israeli Officer

A Palestinian gunman killed an Israeli officer Saturday morning after opening fire on Israeli troops conducting a raid in a West Bank refugee camp known as a hotbed of militants. The violence erupted as Prime Minister Ariel Sharon prepared for what is expected to be a charged Cabinet debate over his proposal to evacuate all Gaza Strip and four West Bank settlements. Although the 23 ministers will discuss the plan, a vote is not expected at Sunday’s meeting because Sharon does not have a majority, government officials said.
