Al Qaeda-linked militants attacked four expatriate compounds in eastern Saudi Arabia on Saturday, killing five foreigners and at least one Saudi and taking an unspecified number of people hostage, security sources said. Saudi security forces later stormed a housing compound in the city of Khobar where the militants were holding the hostages, an employee at the compound told Reuters. He give no further details. A statement purportedly from Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network posted on Islamist Web sites claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group blamed for the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States has vowed to destabilize the U.S.-allied monarchy and the world’s leading oil exporter. Security sources said they believed a Briton was among those killed and witnesses said a body had been dragged through the streets, apparently by militants.
