The Greek army will take over protection of so-called “sensitive” sites in the nation’s railway network during this year’s Olympic Games in Athens. Greek Transport and Communication Minister Michaelis Liapis said that he sought and obtained assurances from the defense minister that armed troops would do everything in their power to protect rail lines during the Games. Mr. Liapis said that a meeting is planned this week to work out the details of the security plan. Railway safety became a key issue after nearly 200 people died in bombing attacks on commuter trains in Madrid in March. Full Story
