US forces said they killed 50 militiamen loyal to radical Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada Sadr in heavy overnight clashes in this Shiite Muslim holy city and Nasiriyah further south. “Sounds of fighting in the downtown area could be heard for much of the night” in Karbala, said US Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, adding that coalition forces estimated they had killed 30 insurgents. “Coalition forces estimate 17 Moqtada militia killed in the vicinity of the shrine area, 13 killed in other areas,” he said Monday. Iraqi medical sources said earlier that at least five militiamen were killed and 32 wounded but witnesses described seeing militiamen dragging their dead away, indicating some may not have been brought to the local hospital.
