US President George W. Bush branded as “terrorism” the death of the head of the US-appointed Iraqi Governing Council, Ezzedine Salim, in a lethal Baghdad car bomb suicide attack. Officials also said they had found traces of sarin gas in a roadside bomb in Baghdad, a rare confirmation that former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein did possess banned weapons. The killing of Salim, 61, a political heavyweight and a member of the Al-Dawa Al-Islamiya, Iraq’s oldest Shiite political party, occured outside the fortified compound housing the coalition headquarters here weeks before Washington intends to hand sovereignty back to Iraqis.
