U.S. involvement in security for this summer’s Athens Olympics will focus on preventing an al Qaeda style attack, a U.S. diplomat said Friday. Athens, the first summer Olympics since the September 11, 2001 attacks on U.S. cities, blamed on Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network, is currently putting in place a $1.18 billion security plan to safeguard the Games. “Our focus has been on an external threat, on al Qaeda associated stuff,” U.S. ambassador to Athens Thomas Miller told reporters. “We have focused on the al Qaeda type of thing.” The United States is part of a seven-nation security advisory group, also including Spain, Israel, Britain, Australia, France and Germany, set up by Olympics organizers to provide training and intelligence.
