Amtrak's President: Riding the Rails Comes With Risks
The New Carrollton Amtrak and MARC station will be the testing ground for the government’s plan to run security checks for rail passengers. The Transportation Security Administration says the testing is expected to begin by the end of May and last 60 to 90 days. Officials haven’t decided how many kinds of equipment to test or in what combination. They’re still trying to determine how quickly machines can check people and luggage. The New Carrollton site was chosen because the platform is open to the elements and serves a mix of people, including rush-hour commuters and longer-distance passengers. The agency intends to screen Amtrak riders and is in talks with the Maryland Transit Administration about participation for MARC. Full Story
