White House to Impose Sanctions on Syria
President Bush this week will levy economic sanctions against Syria for supporting terrorism and not doing enough to prevent militant fighters from entering neighboring Iraq, congressional and administration sources said Monday. The sanctions, which the White House will impose as early as Tuesday, are being ordered because the administration believes Syria has aggravated tensions in the Middle East by supporting militant groups. The United States is ordering the sanctions “because they will not fight terror and they won’t join us in fighting terror,” Bush said in an interview last week with the Cairo-based newspaper Al-Ahram International.
