Taliban gunmen have killed at least 10 Afghan policemen and soldiers in two ambushes in southern Afghanistan in the last 24 hours, government and Taliban officials said Tuesday. The attacks are part of a surge of violence by the Taliban and other insurgents that has killed at least 40 Afghan policemen and soldiers and one American soldier in the last two weeks. Five policemen were ambushed Monday evening on the main road south from the capital to Kandahar in Zabul Province, government officials said. Their bodies were found Tuesday. A Taliban spokesman, Abdul Latif Hakimi, said that the men had been killed by Taliban, and that the victims were newly trained.
