A cautiously optimistic Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern said yesterday they had a “road map” to get Northern Ireland’s suspended assembly up and running by autumn. The prime ministers would not say what route the map would take, but government officials suggested it involved peace commitments from the IRA in return for an amnesty for wanted IRA members and scaled-back security measures in Northern Ireland. The two governments are at a crucial point in the battle to restore power to Northern Ireland.
