President Bush told members of the commission investigating the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks Thursday that he disapproved of the Justice Department’s release of documents aimed at undermining the credibility of a Democratic commission member. Bush’s implicit rebuke of Attorney General John Ashcroft, who recently confronted commissioner Jamie Gorelick at a commission hearing, came at the start of a historic Oval Office meeting with the independent panel that lasted more than three hours. Both Bush and members of the commission, some of whom also have been criticized for politicizing the investigation, sought to tamp down political rhetoric Thursday.
