Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, under pressure from Washington to help stop attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq, said in an interview shown on Wednesday that the Iraqi insurgency was legitimate resistance. U.S. forces in Iraq are trying to quell twin threats from Sunni Muslim guerrillas in Falluja and Shi’ite fighters in the south before they hand over sovereignty to Iraqis on June 30. “Certainly, what has happened on the popular level gives legitimacy to the resistance and shows that the major part of what is happening is resistance,” Assad said in comments aired on Arabic satellite channel Al Jazeera.
