The issue of child soldiers has triggered a controversy in Sri Lanka, where the future of 1000 children released by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) over the past two weeks, remains uncertain. Last week, while the UNICEF was busy facilitating the return of the child soldiers, the LTTE sent a letter to the UNICEF Resident Representative in Colombo, alleging the organization had failed to fulfil its obligations towards them. Interestingly, the LTTE’s allegations follow UNICEF warnings of the danger of their re-recruitment by the rebels. In a statement issued after fighting erupted between cadres belonging to the two LTTE factions on Good Friday in the Eastern district of Batticaloa, the UNICEF urged the LTTE to desist from doing so in future.
