Germany and the Netherlands will send a joint military team to northeastern Afghanistan, known for opium poppy farming, to help in reconstruction projects and provide security, a government spokesman in Berlin said on Friday. Germany would not exceed the 450 soldiers mandated by parliament for these teams, he added. The country has already stationed one of its so called Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRT) of 300 men in Kunduz in northern Afghanistan. The men would stay clear of drug enforcement, the spokesman said. “We acknowledge the poppy farming and report it to the institutions that are in charge of fighting against it.” A date for the start of the mission in Faizabad was not given.
