Northern Ireland’s largest Catholic political party, Sinn Fein, is to face financial sanctions over alleged acts of violence carried out by its Irish Republican Army (IRA) ally, Britain said Tuesday. The move is in response to recommendations in the first report from the province’s new cease-fire monitoring commission, which accuses guerrilla groups on both sides of the sectarian divide of breaching peace pledges. “The commission states that the situation it is now addressing is much better than it was in past years,” Northern Ireland Secretary Paul Murphy told the British Parliament. “However, the commission finds that paramilitary activity is at a disturbingly high level on the part of both (Catholic) republican and (Protestant) loyalist groups.” Full Story
