Palestinians reacted with fury after President George W. Bush broke with decades-old US policy by saying Israeli could retain some of its settlements in the occupied territories. Veteran leader Yasser Arafat warned that there would be no peace in the region until all Jewish settlements had been removed while armed factions vowed that there would be no let-up in their campaign of attacks. “Peace cannot be established without the total end of the Israeli occupation and the settlements,” Arafat said in an uncompromising televised speech here.
