Plan Would Withdraw Settlers and Troops. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s Likud Party announced Sunday that it would hold a referendum among party members later this month on whether Israel should withdraw Jewish settlers and troops from the Gaza Strip and relinquish control of the area to Palestinians. The referendum — to be held April 29 among the party’s 200,000 members — would not be legally binding on Israel, Likud or Sharon, according to the prime minister’s spokesman, Raanan Gissin. But if approved, the evacuation plan would become part of the party’s platform, Gissin said, and Sharon and the party would be politically committed to implementing it. Full Story
