Algerian leader wins by landslide

Algeria’s president has been re-elected with a huge margin of victory, official results of Thursday’s poll show. President Abdelaziz Bouteflika won 83% of votes cast, Interior Minister Yazid Zerhouni said. Mr Bouteflika is credited with taming an Islamic insurgency which has claimed some 100,000 lives in 12 years. Former Prime Minister Ali Benflis, who took just 8% of the votes, claimed “massive fraud” and said he would appeal the outcome of the election. “We do not recognise these results,” he told the BBC. “There’s been massive fraud nationwide – we’ll be taking our complaints to the Constitutional Court”.
