A recent audio taped message by militant al Qaeda supporter Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was “probably” authentic, a CIA official said on Wednesday. “After reviewing the Zarqawi message, the CIA has determined it is probably him,” the official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. “It is consistent with the types of messages that he has put out in the past.” The voice on the tape, posted on an Islamist Internet site, urged militants to step up attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and against Shi’ite “collaborators.” Zarqawi is widely believed to be in Iraq and is suspected of possibly being behind some of the violence that has erupted in the country. The voice on the tape claimed responsibility for a string of attacks in Iraq, including the killing in August of Ayatollah Mohammed Baqer al-Hakim, head of the country’s largest Shi’ite group.
