A “terrorist cell” that was planning to attack the Jordanian government had also targeted the U.S. Embassy in Amman, a U.S. official said Tuesday. A Jordanian official last week said Jordan had uncovered a group planning to carry out “terrorist” attacks in the kingdom, arresting some suspects and hunting for others. The U.S. official said the U.S. Embassy in Amman this week issued a message to U.S. citizens in Jordan saying the embassy itself had been a target. The message hinted at the possibility that the cell’s members were linked to the al Qaeda network. “The government of Jordan has announced that it has taken steps against a terrorist cell which had targeted several government of Jordan facilities,” the embassy said in the “warden message,” which carried Monday’s date.
