A Palestinian militant from the radical Hamas movement infiltrated a West Bank settlement and killed a Jewish resident before being shot dead, as Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat said he was unconcerned about Israeli threats to kill him. The overnight attack saw an 18-year-old Palestinian from the Tulkarem refugee camp in the northern West Bank, infiltrate the nearby Avnei Hefetz settlement and start firing at one of the houses. One of the locals who left his house to confront the gunman was shot dead and his 14-year-old daughter was lightly injured, the army said. The gunman was shot dead by troops stationed nearby. Hamas named the attacker as Ramzi Fakhri Arda in a statement sent to AFP in Jenin, and said the strike was to avenge Israel’s killing of the movement’s spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in an air strike early last week.
