NATO will bear the cost for its role in helping safeguard the Olympics as Greece struggles with the growing financial cost of the games, a Greek defense official said Thursday. Greece has asked for NATO’s help with aerial surveillance, sea patrols and protection against a chemical, biological or nuclear attack. The government’s Deputy Defense Minister Yiannis Lambropoulos told parliament Thursday that “the cost of this assistance will burden only NATO.” At more than $800 million, security costs for the Aug. 13-29 Olympics are the highest in history — three times what it cost in Sydney four years ago.
