Greece’s preparations for the Olympic games were threatened yesterday with yet more turmoil after the country’s biggest labour union said it would press ahead with strike action, starting with a nationwide walkout today. The spectre of labour unrest disrupting already delayed Olympic construction projects came as the newly elected conservative government said many of the works may have to be scaled back due to budget overruns. Urging workers in both the public and private sector to join today’s strike, the Confederation of Greek Workers warned the centre-right New Democrats of further action if they did not approve demands for better pay and benefits.
