A Tamil political candidate campaigning in Sri Lanka’s general elections was shot dead on Tuesday, the third political killing in three days, marking a sudden spike in violence on the eve of Friday’s ballot. The candidate, Rajan Sathiyamoorthy, was a member of the Tamil National Alliance, a party seen as the mainstream face of the Tamil Tigers, a paramilitary group who have fought for an independent state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. But many suspect Mr Sathiyamoorthy was the victim of rift within the Tamil Tigers, and was killed by unidentified gunmen for supporting Karuna, an eastern regional Tiger commander who split from the group earlier this month.
