THERE was confusion last night over the extent of the terrorist threat faced by Britain, after David Blunkett played down suggestions that al-Qaeda was targeting the country. In an apparent rebuke to Sir John Stevens, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, Mr Blunkett, the Home Secretary, said he was concerned about the “knock-on effect” of suggestions that Britain was the next target of the terror network.
