A tape purportedly featuring the voice of Ayman al-Zawahiri on Thursday urged Pakistanis to overthrow the government of President Pervez Musharraf, as expectations faded that the senior Al Qaeda leader was on the verge of being captured in Pakistan’s tribal region. “I call on Muslims in Pakistan to get rid of their government, which is working for Americans,” said the audio recording broadcast by the Arabic television channel Al Jazeera. “This client government … will continue to submit to America until it destroys Pakistan.” The tape appeared also to refer to the recent strife in Pakistan’s tribal areas, calling on tribesmen to resist the army’s incursions. But it offered no evidence to suggest al-Zawahiri was the “high-value target” who officials last week speculated the army had surrounded in the tribal area of South Waziristan. Full Story
