The US said it continues to view Hamas as a terrorist organization and threat, despite its leader’s pledge not to target US citizens or interests after Israel assassinated Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmad Yassin in the Gaza Strip. The State Department said it had no intention of revising a series of travel alerts issued late Tuesday based in part on Hamas threats to attack Americans after the Yassin assassination, despite promises by new leader Abdelaziz al-Rantissi. In the Gaza Strip Wednesday night, the armed wing of Hamas promised an “unprecedented” response to the Yassin assassination. “Our action will be like a volcanic explosion, the extent of which will be unprecedented and which will strike the Zionist entity” Mohammed Deif, chief of the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement.
