GORDON Brown yesterday ordered the Bank of England to freeze the assets of five senior members of Palestinian militant group Hamas, including the group’s new spiritual chief, Abdel-Aziz al-Rantissi. The Chancellor said there were reasonable grounds for suspecting the five men facilitated or commissioned acts of terrorism. The announcement came three days after Mr Rantissi’s predecessor, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, was assassinated by the Israelis. Mr Brown told the Commons Treasury select committee that the fight against the funding of terrorism must be determined.
