Two Qatari wrestlers arrested in Russia in a diplomatic dispute have been freed and left the country, while Qatar evicted a Russian diplomat detained earlier on suspicion of involvement in the killing of a Chechen rebel leader, officials said Wednesday. The Qataris’ release and the diplomat’s eviction followed a telephone conversation Tuesday night between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Qatari leader, Emir Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Russian authorities arrested the Qataris in a Moscow airport last month following the arrest of three Russian intelligence agents in Qatar on charges of killing rebel leader Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev in a car bombing.
