Up to 100 die in violence as Afghan aviation minister assassinated

Up to 100 people were killed in the western Afghan city of Herat after fierce factional fighting erupted following the assassination of a government minister, officials said. Troops loyal to Herat governor Ismail Khan clashed with soldiers backing rival commander General Abdul Zahir shortly after Khan’s son, Aviation Minister Mirwais Sadiq was killed, apparently by a rocket propelled grenade. “About 100 people may have died in the fighting, there are ambulances in the city busy ferrying people to the hospital, so we don’t have an exact figure,” said a senior local government official in Herat, requesting anonymity.
