Pakistan said it has seized more than 100 suspected militants, including many foreigners, after intense fighting with die-hard fighters believed to be hiding a top Al-Qaeda leader near the Afghan border. The captures came as Pakistani troops encountered fierce resistance as they tightened a military cordon around villages in the country’s northwest tribal zone, vowing to take up to 500 fighters “dead or alive”. Speculation, fuelled by the ferocity and size of the resistance, has been mounting that Osama bin Laden’s Egyptian deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri is holed up in the mudbrick fortresses being targeted by the army.
