Spain urged to go on opposing terrorists in Latin America
The US military’s top officer for Latin America urged Spain on Thursday not to drop its support for anti-terrorist policies in the region, especially as Washington’s flagship plan in Colombia appears to be delivering results. Speculation over whether Spain’s possible withdrawal of its troops from the US-led coalition force in Iraq could herald a similar change in foreign policy in other regions has not gone unnoticed in Latin America. The conservative Colombian government of President Alvaro Uribe, the world’s third-largest recipient of US military aid, saw José María Aznar, the outgoing Spanish prime minister, as its strongest supporter in Europe.
