Kagame set genocide in motion, Paris judge says

The destruction of the plane carrying President Juvénal Habyarimana – the incident which began the Rwandan genocide – is blamed by a French investigating magistrate on the Tutsi rebel leader, now president, Paul Kagame, according to the newspaper Le Monde. The magistrate has concluded that Mr Kagame gave direct orders to fire two rockets at the plane on April 6 1994, the paper says. It is a grave allegation, because within hours of the plane being brought down on its approach to the Rwandan capital, Kigali, Hutu soldiers and militias began 100 days of slaughter in which an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus died.
