Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom obtained assurances from Egypt that it would guarantee security on its border with the Gaza Strip if Israel pulls out of the Palestinian territory. Shalom also said he found in Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak a leader determined to push for Arab-Israeli peace and welcomed what he called a fresh start in more than three years of troubled Egyptian-Israeli ties. “Israel is committed to peace,” Shalom told reporters after talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Ahmed Maher, which followed an earlier meeting with both Maher and Mubarak. Shalom, on the first visit here by an Israeli foreign minister since August 2002, wants Egypt’s cooperation on security if Prime Minister Ariel Sharon acts on a plan to withdraw from most Jewish settlements in Gaza.
