Norwegian envoy to meet divided Tamil Tigers
Erik Solheim, Norway’s peace envoy to war-torn Sri Lanka, will meet the political wing of the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on Thursday in a fresh attempt to revive the island’s faltering peace process. Mr Solheim’s visit was meant to coincide with the two-year anniversary of a Norwegian-brokered ceasefire. But an unprecedented rift within the LTTE, which has fought a 20-year insurgency for a sovereign Tamil homeland, has jeopardised the fragile ceasefire. The potentially volatile LTTE split comes just before national elections on April 2, which are aimed at resolving disputes over the peace process. Full Story
