Lawyers for the only person in the world to be convicted for the September 11 attacks have applied for his release from prison pending a new trial ordered by a German high court last week, a court spokeswoman said. A spokeswoman for the regional court in the northern city of Hamburg said it had received a motion to free Moroccan Mounir El Motassadeq late Monday. She said it was unclear when the court would rule on the application. Motassadeq, who has been in German custody since November 2001, was convicted in February 2003 on 3,066 counts of accessory to murder and membership in a terrorist organization for his logistical help to some of the suicide hijackers in the attacks on New York and Washington.
