US and coalition troops in Iraq are increasingly under assault from insurgent elements determined to disrupt the transfer of power to local authorities, CIA Director George Tenet told a US Senate panel. “In the past two weeks, violence has been on the upswing,” Tenet said in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee. “The daily average number of attacks on US and coalition forces has dropped from its November peak, but is similar to that of last August,” Tenet said. “As we approach the transfer of sovereignty to Iraqis on 1 July, terrorists may want to complicate the transfer and intimidate Iraqis who are working to make it happen,” he said.
