The United States has no direct evidence that Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi, the Islamic militant blamed for suicide attacks that killed over 170 people in Iraq this week, is alive or dead, a senior US military official said. Brigadier General David Rodriguez said the US military was operating on the assumption that Zarqawi was leading the terrorist network that carried out the attacks in Baghdad and Karbala. But he said, “There is no direct evidence of whether he’s alive or dead at this point.” The admission was jarringly at odds with confident US assertions about Zarqawi’s leading role in the Iraq attacks.
