Barely six days after the closing of nominations for the April 2 polls in Sri Lanka, more than 158 major election-related clashes were registered, amid threats by Tamil rebels, indicating a violence-ridden campaign that is likely to scare away voters in the coming weeks. While Anuradhapura in the North Central Province and Puttlam in the North Western province are identified as the most violence-prone districts, there are signs that the predominantly minority Northern and Eastern provinces too are gradually becoming violent as the campaign gets off the ground. The latest death occured in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) stronghold of Batticoloa Monday night, where rebels shot P.
