An election candidate has been killed in Sri Lanka ahead of general elections due in April, police say. Gunmen attacked Sinnathamby Sunderapillai, a minority Tamil candidate, in a hospital in Batticaloa where he was being treated for injuries suffered during an earlier attack. Mr Sunderapillai was a candidate from Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe’s party in Batticaloa. This is the first political killing in the run-up to the election which has been marked by a series of violent incidents. No group has said it carried out the attack, which comes two days after Amnesty International asked Tamil Tiger rebels to let opposing ethnic Tamil politicians campaign freely. The rebels marked the opening of the campaign by warning of “serious consequences” if their supporters were obstructed from voting. Full Story
