Absence of key player could undermine India-Pakistan talks

Behind the smiles of Indian and Pakistani negotiators, who announced a long-awaited road map for peace this week, is a lingering concern that true detente will be jeopardized by the divisive issue of Kashmir, whose representatives were not even invited to the historic talks. “We welcome the decision of India and Pakistan, but without the participation of the people of Kashmir such talks will not yield any results,” warned Moulana Abbas Ansari, chairman of the moderate faction of Kashmir’s separatist All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference.
