A Sunni Muslim cleric shot dead over the weekend was described by followers as a peaceful, quiet force in the community, and neighbors said they could not fathom why he had been targeted. Sheik Dhamer al-Dhari, a cleric for the past 20 years in Baghdad’s western Khadra neighborhood, was killed Saturday after gunmen knocked on the door of his home just after prayers, neighbors said. “Everybody knew him, Sunni, Shia, they loved him alike,” said Ziad Hamed, a neighbor. “Who could have done this? Everyone knows this is a time when people are launching all kinds of war in Iraq . . . . People are happy to create problems in Iraq,” he said as a crowd of women at al-Dhari’s small mosque wailed in sorrow. Full Story
